As a wedding photography and video team, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing every type of wedding, trend, and tradition you can imagine. Some of them, I’m absolutely OBSESSED with, while others… not so much. Here are a few of my unpopular wedding opinions:
P.S. no hard feelings if any of these pertain to you! This are simply my UNPOPULAR OPINIONS!
The first touch—a moment where couples hold hands or stand back-to-back without seeing each other—can be a deeply emotional and intimate moment. However, reading your vows during this moment, without making eye contact, can feel disconnected. Vows are such personal promises, and not being able to look into each other’s eyes while saying them can take away from the emotional impact. Save the vows for the ceremony or first look!
While some photographers tilt the camera to create dynamic, artistic shots, this “crooked photo” trend can often feel disorienting rather than creative. A slight angle might add drama or movement, specifically to some dance floor shots but when it’s overdone, it takes away from the natural beauty and balance of the image. Timeless, well-composed photos will always outshine trends that might feel out of place when you look back at your wedding album years later. Keep it classic—you’ll thank yourself in the future.
Yes, golden hour gives you that dreamy light, but it’s not the pinnacle l for wedding photos. A skilled photographer can create stunning shots no matter the time of day. Don’t stress about missing that golden light—magic can happen at any hour! I personally love blue hour and flash photos!
First looks don’t take away from the magic of walking down the aisle. In fact, they often enhance it! Seeing each other privately before the ceremony lets you share a personal moment and ease those nerves, making the ceremony even more special.
Elopements can be intimate, meaningful, and stress-free. It’s not the size of the guest list that makes a wedding special—it’s the connection between you and your partner. Whether you have 200 guests or just the two of you and a couple of witnesses, it’s the love that matters most and celebrating it!
Rain on your wedding day? Not a big deal! Some of the most beautiful, romantic photos are taken in the rain. It adds a sense of adventure and creates unforgettable moments (plus, there’s always the chance of a rainbow afterward!)
Feel like ditching the bouquet toss or skipping the cake cutting? Go for it! Traditions should serve you, not the other way around. Your wedding day should reflect who you are as a couple, not just follow the “rules.” Pick what traditions you want, and toss the rest! Your wedding is YOUR wedding. You do you boo!
Love kids but not sure they belong at your wedding? That’s okay! Kids are adorable, but they can also be a distraction, and drive up the cost of the wedding. Keeping your wedding adults-only (except for immediate family) can help keep the vibe relaxed and fun.
So there you have it—some trends and traditions I’m just not on board with! But at the end of the day, it’s your wedding, and you should do what feels right for you.
