Unfortunately, elopements used to be extremely taboo and often talked about in a negative light. But times have changed, and eloping has become more and more common (and admired) in recent years! If you’re planning on celebrating your marriage by eloping we are here to say you’re going to LOVE it. As destination elopement photographers, we have spent a ton of time with couples in the elopement/intimate wedding planning process and are so excited for you to experience it! This is such an exciting time in life and your love is worth celebrating — however big or small. In this post, we are going to share with you some common myths about elopements, and why we think you should elope! Hopefully this will help you learn more about why elopements are so special.
We are HUGE advocates for small and intimate elopements, they are a wonderful option for many couples looking to tie the knot. However, we have heard some common misconceptions circling around about eloping, so we’re here to put these rumors to rest! Instead of viewing elopements as a form of rebellion, elopements are now a great option for couples wanting a low-stress, intimate experience and to stick to a smaller budget. At the end of the day your elopement is about you and no one else. Now, it’s time to bust some myths!
Myth #1: You have to elope alone, and you can’t bring anyone with you.
Okay, this is so totally false. In fact, we encourage you to bring anyone you’d like with you to your elopement! It can for SURE be just you and your partner, but if you want your best friend or parents present then go for it! Elopements are typically highly intimate, filled with memorable and romantic moments and we love that! Over the years, we’ve captured elopements with anywhere from 2-15 people in attendance. Just remember aaallll of the details of your elopement are up to you, so make the most of it! If you’re looking for a mix of a totally private elopement and an intimate wedding, then consider sharing your vows privately. Then the rest of your day can be spent celebrating with your loved ones! It’s all totally up to you.
Myth #2: You can’t incorporate traditional wedding elements
Whaaaaat? Who said this, we’d like to have a chat! Seriously though, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Almost every elopement we’ve ever been a part of has incorporated traditional wedding elements in some way. It is still a wedding after all! I totally understand not wanting to carry a wedding cake up a mountain for your cliffside elopement, but if having a cake-cutting is important to you, keep it at your AirBnB for a post-ceremony moment! Want to share a first dance as newlyweds? Do it! Carry a portable speaker with you, this can happen wherever, whenever. At the end of the day we mean it when we say there are no rules when it comes to eloping. Your friends and family may have their thoughts but you don’t need to listen! Remember, this is YOUR day. YOU DO YOU BOO!
Myth #3: You’re selfish for eloping
Absolutely not!!! This is one of the most common myths about elopements, but hear us loud and clear when we tell you eloping is NOT SELFISH. Friends, this is your one and only wedding day and if you’re dreaming of a magical elopement with just the two of you, then do it! I’ve heard many stories of couples almost giving up their elopement dream because of family members saying it’s selfish, but they are always SO happy they went with their first gut and eloped. You can always throw a big party later down the line to satisfy your family’s wishes and celebrate with your loved ones, but your wedding day will only come once. Make it yours. Whether you’re inviting 2 or 20 guests your elopement will be a time in life that you’ll never forget. You can always share stories and photos with your friends and family afterwards, so they feel like they were right there with you!
