These two cuties absolutely SMASHED it at this shoot! They also happen to be the most gorgeous couple ever, and such naturals. This dream shoot came to life thanks to the brilliant mind of Emma Kay Photography who thought up the entire concept. Everything about this bridal cake smash shoot was incredible — the design, the setting, the concept, the vendors, it all was so effortlessly cool.
Being a part of creative collaborations like this with other photographers is always a ton of fun and a wonderful way to keep learning from other creatives in the industry. For me, this shoot was just an absolute blast! I was having so much fun capturing every ounce of romance and playfulness during their bridal cake smash, Jackie and Steven are so comfortable in front of the camera. In fact, I almost forgot that this wasn’t actually their wedding! I know it’s intimidating modeling for a group of photographers but they did an amazing job and were total pros.
Jackie and Steven were so much fun to work with and I love how they were open to everything we threw at them. The concept of this shoot was rather… messy, but FUN! They seriously could not have been more excited about the opportunity to smash cake in each other’s faces, haha!
We’ve all seen the typical birthday party cake smashes for one-year-olds, but WOW this was something else. The bridal cake smash was for sure my favorite part! It was absolutely iconic, I mean look at these shots! I couldn’t help but laugh along with Jackie and Steven as they fully embraced this messy moment. This shoot had it all, a fun-loving vibe with plenty of romance. Seriously major goals!
The bridal cake smash shoot took place at one of my all-time favorite studios in Arizona, an indoor studio in Phoenix called Afternoon Studio. This studio has so many fun props available for use that make every session unique, like funky mirrors, stones, and more! To make the space our own we styled this session with a monochrome design and I am SO happy we did. The modern, elevated feel paired so well with Jackie and Steven’s light-hearted, playful touch.
With the chic white backdrop and white tablecloth, it felt like our couple was just floating in a beautiful fluffy cloud. We lit some delicate taper candles and votives set on thin glass candlesticks to create a moody ambiance. Of course, we had the delicious cake (that was soon destroyed) on display for a few shots, and the icing details on this tiny tier were truly adorable. It looked so elegant, major shoutout to Shelby Cake for the adorable, delicious wedding cake!!
Prior to the cake smash, Jackie and Steven posed for some editorial-worthy bridal portraits that were simply stunning. I LOVE the dress that Jackie wore, it was simple but romantic. After some beautiful shots of the two toasting with bubbly and cuddling up together, we let Jackie and Steven go to TOWN on that cake! It started off relatively chill, Jackie placed her all-white rose bouquet on the table then they sweetly fed each other bites of cake. Soon enough, they were dotting each other’s noses with icing, and along came the chaos (AKA, the best part of the shoot)!!
The two began smearing icing and cake all over each other’s faces. We encouraged them to kiss the sweetness off each other’s lips, all the movement and adorableness made these photos SO fun! Not a single one of us could resist laughing along with them.
I just loved the idea behind this shoot so much and hope more couples are willing to get messy during their bridal shoots! We definitely don’t need to do this AT your wedding, but if you want some epic shots like this, reach out and let’s schedule a special day for it!
Here’s another amazing idea… You know that single tier of cake you’re planning on saving for your one-year anniversary? It’s not a secret that they typically don’t taste great after a year in the freezer, so how about a one-year anniversary cake smash shoot instead? How adorable would that be — and a great way to celebrate!
