I absolutely love a good surprise proposal. one of my favorite moments in time to photograph! There really is nothing better than seeing the moment two people in love decide to take the next step into being together forever. Somia and Nick were just the sweetest. When Nick popped the question they both were just so giddy about being engaged, it was so cute!!
Surprise proposals can be tricky; nothing would ruin the surprise more than someone with a large camera following you up a random mountain, haha! So, I kept my distance. Nick and I had been discussing the details of the day for months prior to the day. I could tell he was so ready to get down on one knee. We had to hike up to Devil‘s Bridge, it’s about 3 miles roundtrip so it isn’t the easiest hike but it isn’t too bad either! In order to stay incognito and make sure Somia wasn’t onto us I acted as if I was a regular hiker… and then basically stalked them all the way up the mountain, I promise it’s not as weird as it sounds! haha!
The lighting at the top of the mountain couldn’t have been more perfect; even though we planned everything months in advance we really picked the best day ever! At the top of the mountain, Nick and Somia stood looking out at the view and I snuck out my camera, ready for the big moment. I saw Nick get down on one knee and then pop! Out of hiding, I came. Somia was so shocked and so happy; not to mention she had no idea I was there! (success!) Did I mention that nick thought through every detail perfectly? The ring he gave Somia was hand-made by Alexis Russell Jewelry and sooo pretty! I’m sure there were a ton of reasons for Somia to say yes but this ring was for sure the icing on the cake.
It was as if they were truly the only two people in the world (aside from me but I’m not in the shot so really it’s like I wasn’t even there)! At the peak of the mountain where they had their beautiful engagement, they spent a moment really taking in every detail. Somia’s dress matched the mountains perfectly; a bright beautiful terracotta. Our newly engaged couple blended in but stood out beautifully against the stunning mountain range that just so slightly poked out through the dusty sky. It was perfect!!
Somia and Nick were floating. Above the world and in each other’s arms, they were just on cloud 9 the entire time! The best part? It really was as if I was just a fly on the wall. When couples are in such a euphoric state and their only focus is on each other the best photos are captured. It’s those moments that you hope to capture and keep in your mind forever; I was so so happy to be there to capture them all!!
Being engaged is truly blissful and I’ll never forget getting to be a part this moment for Somia and Nick. I just love these two so much!! Their happiness and admiration for each other made the 3-mile hike 100% worth it. Somia and nick, I hope you float on top of the world throughout the rest of your engagement and marriage.
